The atmosphere was brimming with music and joy as both the young and elderly gathered for a VE Day anniversary street celebration in eastern Belfast.
A section of the city’s Woodstock Road was temporarily shut down to make way for the community event held on Bank Holiday Monday, celebrating 80 years since the conclusion of World War II in Europe.
Clear blue skies contributed to the festive mood as retirees savored their afternoon tea under the warm spring sun, while kids had fun on merry-go-rounds and amusement stalls up the street.
Jane Watterson, once a top flutist, was among those who graced the stage to perform for the audience.
The musician, originally from Scotland but residing in Carrickfergus, expressed his congratulations to the organizers of the event.
"I adore it—the presence of all these small dance groups, the Ulster-Scots aspect, the variety of musicians, there really is something for everyone," she stated.
And they excel when catering to senior citizens too. Everyone gets their small high tea along with various other treats. They make sure to include everyone irrespective of age, color, beliefs, or faith.
Ms Watterson emphasized that it is crucial for the narrative of VE Day to be shared with younger generations.
"I believe it's crucial to commemorate it annually," she mentioned additionally.
To me, individually, each day feels like Remembrance Day due to all that has transpired over the years and continues to this day. However, I also believe it's crucial to acknowledge it officially.
Janet Caldwell went with her husband, William, to join his sisters-in-law, Rita and Edna, at the occasion.
"I believe this is highly beneficial for the community," she stated.
It's great for the children, lots of enjoyment, everyone gathered. Perfect weather for such an occasion.
We've just arrived for the afternoon tea at the Peppercorn cafe, and my little grandchild will join me at the funfair.
She commented, "It's essentially about remembering and also enjoying ourselves and gathering together for some laughter, a great day, with sunny weather."
The event was organized by the Titanic Historical and Cultural Society with assistance from the National Lottery’s Community Fund.
The event organizer, Stephen Gough, mentioned that the planning process started 11 months prior.
"Just behind us lies the Willowfield war memorial, and the community takes great pride in it," he stated.
But simultaneously, beyond just recalling memories, it's also about making an appearance, reconnecting with folks you haven't seen in some time—old buddies—and allowing the community to gather together for a great experience, brightening everyone's day, and watching the joy of the little ones.
And that's truly what it's all about – along with commemorating VE Day 80.
