More than 25 years since the advent of the World Wide Web, the digital transformation within the European Union seems to be only half complete.
The latest Eurostat report The digitization efforts on the bloc reveal that 44% of the community does not possess fundamental digital abilities.
More specifically, more than 150 million individuals lack the ability to perform tasks such as searching for information online, sending emails or other forms of communication, installing software, safeguarding personal data, or generating digital content.
Far from reaching the EU’s 2030 goal of an 80% digital literacy rate.
The minimum rates were observed in Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, and Italy, whereas the highest rates were found in the Netherlands, Finland, Ireland, and Denmark.
Many Bulgarians, Romanians, and Italians do not use e-government services.
A lack of proficiency with digital tools is another factor contributing to the limited adoption of e-government services.
Among all individuals in the European Union who utilized the internet within a span of 12 months, merely 47% accessed public authorities’ websites to gather or verify details such as operational times, regulations, entitlements, or miscellaneous services.
The greatest number of e-service users was observed in Denmark, Finland, and Cyprus.
In the European Union rankings, Bulgaria, Romania, and Italy find themselves at the bottom positions.
- Seeking an IT position? Several European nations are urgently seeking talented individuals to fill roles.
Benjamin Welby, an expert in digital transformation at Euronews, states, "I believe there are two distinct narratives about Europe."
One where digital is deeply ingrained in society, and another where it’s just beginning to emerge. While there are significant differences between countries when you look closely, the overall averages remain consistent.
