Cardinal Robert Prevost, aged 69 — who will henceforth be referred to as Pope Leo XIV — became the inaugural head of the Catholic Church hailing from America when he was announced on Thursday.

Born in Chicago, Prevost spent much of his career serving as a missionary in Peru. He was made a cardinal by the previous Pope, Francis, just two years ago. He was a strong supporter of his predecessor.

Over the last two years, he has been tasked with selecting priests from around the globe who will go on to become Bishops within the Vatican.
