UK Airline Cuts Flights to New York by £100s, Prices Beat Even EasyJet — Now More Affordable Than Ever in Australia

A new UK airline has nearly cut in half the cost of tickets for its inaugural flight from Glasgow to New York .

Global Airlines, founded by the self-made UK billionaire James Asquith, raised eyebrows last month , when sky-high ticket prices were revealed.

In April, Global Airlines sold an economy round-trip ticket for £778 for their first-ever flight from Glasgow to JFK on May 15, with a return trip on May 19.

Compared to the £399 British Airways They were charging for the exact same dates, and it was nearly 95% pricier.

But two weeks later and Global are now offering promo codes that slash these prices by (almost) half.

As shared on their Instagram page, you can secure an economy-class Global Traveller flight with a round trip from either Manchester or Glasgow for only £380 by applying the code GLOBAL380.

This indicates that the latest global prices are now more affordable than before. EasyJet As of this writing, the most affordable round-trip ticket with EasyJet (operated by EasyJet and Norse) from Glasgow to JFK for the same dates is priced at £573.21.

For those with a bit more disposable income, using the code GLOBAL1999 will secure you a business-class round-trip ticket for £1,999. This represents a significant discount compared to the initial price of £3,700 mentioned back in April.

The commentators on the Instagram post were ecstatic about the announcement. '@globalairlines_fans' remarked, 'I’ve secured my spot,' adding 'Excited for this.' Another commenter chimed in with, 'It looks fantastic! Looking forward to trying it out.'

However, Global Airlines' business approach has sparked debate within the aviation sector, with many doubting their ability to sustain operations over the long term.

James, who serves as both the CEO and founder of Airbnb competitor Holiday Swap, revealed his plans for a new startup airline last year—something he has dreamed about since childhood, influenced by his parents' careers as pilots.

He pledged that Global would 'restore the golden era of air travel, adding a contemporary touch.'

He aimed to bring back glamour to air travel with 12-foot-long 'suites' for first-class travelers and included a 'Gamer class,' equipped with Xbox and Playstations .

He was aiming for a fleet of 100 aircraft to be operational worldwide from various European centers by 2025. Although he has not reached his target yet, Global’s first flight is scheduled to take place in just one week.

Why aren't experts persuaded by Global Airlines' strategy? Their business model relies on utilizing the Airbus A380, which is currently the biggest commercial passenger plane available.

These large, two-story aircraft are no longer produced, and fewer than 200 remain operational following their discontinuation in 2021.

Although James indicates that these aircraft are favored by passengers, pilots, and crew members alike, they come with high operational costs and only prove economical when fully booked. The excitement surrounding this large airplane might not be sufficient to attract enough ticket sales.

Marina Efthymiou, an aviation specialist and professor of aviation management at Dublin City University, formerly shared this insight: vtrik :The A380s have a capacity ranging from approximately 500 to over 800 passengers, varying based on the seating arrangement.

'This is an enormous number of passengers, one that even major airlines struggle to fill. Typically, a transatlantic flight carries around 250 people.'

'Globally, airlines might be operating flights with half-full cabins, and they often deal with extremely slim profit margins regarding airplane ticket prices.'

The duration for which Global can continue operations depends on the wealth of James Asquith and his ability to sustain losses over time.
