This year, the event is set from May 17 to June 8, 2025, in Washington, D.C. However, due to increasing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments in the U.S., many people are reconsidering their travel plans. In Australia, several individuals have decided against attending, worried about potential backlash based on their identities or beliefs.
This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pride in Washington, D.C., where the city will be hosting guided walks, drag performances, brunch events, musical concerts, discussion panels, celebratory gatherings, and protest marches. During WorldPride’s stint in New York back in 2019, approximately 5 million attendees joined in the festivities. The Capital Pride Alliance anticipates an even larger crowd this time around.

is an international festival aimed at increasing visibility and awareness for the LGBTQ+ community. Organized by one of its member groups—Amsterdam Pride will take place in 2026—the inaugural event took place in Rome back in 2000. Upon choosing Washington, D.C., the political atmosphere in the United States was relatively more welcoming towards the LGBTQ+ community. Nonetheless, the situation has changed considerably since then.

It has been reported that Ph.D. student Mik Bartels, whose research focuses on discrimination within healthcare faced by the LGBTQI+ community, decided to cancel his attendance plans. He received an invitation to join discussions at a World Pride conference through a scholarship but chose not to go this time around. Previously, he participated in the 2023 edition held in Sydney. However, due to heightened concerns about possible detainment related to how he looks or because of his scholarly focus—which touches upon terminology now prohibited under certain federal guidelines—he expressed reservations.
Mik explained: “Considering my visibly queer identity, with my studies specifically addressing issues surrounding LGBTIQ+ individuals, along with having an open public image regarding these matters, I didn’t feel secure enough knowing whether crossing into the United States might lead me getting detained.” Several others made similar decisions altering their travel arrangements accordingly.
These concerns are valid. The United States has held individuals arriving from different nations, leading multiple governments and activist organizations to release travel warnings.

issued an advisory alerting LGBTQ+ travelers—particularly those whose identification documents have an "X" marker or who have been involved in activism—to consider refraining from traveling to the United States. They cautioned about possible embarrassment, ill-treatment, ridicule, refusal of entry, and detainment.
In February, the Canadian LGBTQ+ advocacy organization

pulled out of U.S.-organized activities, such as World Pride, due to both financial pressures imposed by the Trump administration and the possible risks for transgender and nonbinary employees. "The primary reason behind this choice is to protect our transgender and non-binary personnel who could encounter discriminatory practices when crossing land and air borders to participate in these gatherings. Additionally, we want to show support for international counterparts facing comparable fears about entering the United States."
Several additional challenges arose. Multiple World Pride events initially planned at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts had to be rescheduled.

Ryan Bos, the executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, who is organizing this year’s event, stressed that the festival will proceed as scheduled. "Each year World Pride holds significant importance, but this year presents an exceptionally powerful historical occasion that we cannot ignore… It is crucial for us to guarantee that our community does not feel compelled to retreat into secrecy again.”
In the meantime, numerous Pride events throughout the United States have faced setbacks.

This followed several rollbacks of diversity policies within these organizations.

Nevertheless, this year’s World Pride still stands out as a significant event. Despite political changes, Pride persists as a movement of defiance. Elliott Ferguson, who serves both as the president and CEO of Destination D.C., maintains an optimistic outlook regarding participation levels, observing that only a few have opted to cancel their plans. “The message we convey is one of safety and inclusivity,” he stated. “Your worries underscore precisely why World Pride holds such importance. Here in Washington, D.C., people can come forward, express themselves, and ensure they’re being heard.”

Event organizers recognize public concerns. They advise all international visitors to familiarize themselves with any warnings provided by their home countries. It is suggested that individuals planning to enter the United States weigh these actions carefully after assessing the possible hazards, since they, together with advocacy groups and collaborating entities, are closely monitoring the policies implemented by the present federal government.
