Sydney's Pothole Predicament: Suburbs in Crisis

A significant financial backlog is causing Sydney city councils to struggle with repairing key roads, particularly affecting areas in the western and southwestern parts of the region.

Every year, the NRMA releases a significant study covering NSW's 128 local government areas.

This year, they discovered a funding gap of $3.4 billion to keep roads at a safe standard.

That represents a 20 percent increase from the previous year's $2.8 billion backlog.

The Blacktown City Council has the largest deficit at $84 million, closely trailed by the City of Canterbury Bankstown Council which reports a shortage of $77 million.

Parramatta is lacking $75 million, Liverpool is behind by $55 million, and Penrith is missing $54 million.

According to the NRMA, extended rainfall has worsened the issue for local governments.

"Directly linked to the road deterioration caused by adverse weather conditions is an increase in calls we've received at the NRMA regarding issues with tyres and wheels from motorists," stated NRMA’s Peter Khoury.

In preparation for National Road Safety Week next week, the NRMA has highlighted that poorly maintained roads pose significant concerns regarding driver safety.

This morning, the state's road toll stood at 130, which is an increase from 111 over the same period last year.
