The news: Sims, a company involved in metals recycling, announced it will discontinue efforts to develop and bring to market plasma-assisted gasification technology aimed at treating automotive shredder residue waste.
The numbers: Sims mentioned that the expenses related to closures are anticipated to reach approximately $4 million in the latter part of fiscal year 2025, along with a non-cash writedown of $21 million.
The context: Following a market evaluation of the technological and commercial feasibility, the firm decided to proceed with this plan. They acknowledged that even though the concept of a circular plastic economy is progressing, they determined that “present market circumstances do not favor expanding the use of this technology.”
