Even though the temperatures may be higher than normal, it won’t prevent copious amounts of mead from circulating through the Adelaide Hills this weekend as numerous knights gather to clash in combat at Paracombe.
For over three decades, the South Australian Medieval Fair has drawn throngs of individuals dressed in historical attire and armor for two days of vibrant celebration.
The event organizer and head official, Brigitte Winton, mentioned that the fair will feature a 150-meter long jousting field for authentic jousters, equestrian archers, and "combat knights," along with live demonstrations and handcrafted campsites showcasing "Medieval life."
She mentioned that there are incredible individuals who show genuine dedication and enthusiasm towards their work.
Ms Winton developed an interest in the Middle Ages as a child whose father was "always fond of classics and history".
She mentioned that when other children were engrossed in various novels, they were delving into works like 'Helen of Troy' and historical texts instead.

I believe I caught it from him, and after Ms Winton and her spouse learned about the event, we decided, 'Sure thing, we’ll join in.'
He also has a keen interest in history.
The duo has been engaged for three decades, beginning their journey as "traders" prior to transitioning into performances and eventually taking on roles within the committee.
“It’s somewhat akin to a virus — once you’ve contracted it, you find it hard to let go,” Ms Winton stated.
Many individuals have caught the medieval bug.

Capturing imaginations
Medieval fairs are becoming more prevalent throughout Australia with comparable celebrations taking place in locations like Mount Gambier in Victoria, Sydney, and Balingup in Western Australia.
Professor Louise D'Arcens's main research field at Macquarie University is the Middle Ages, which spanned the fifth to the 15th centuries.

However, in some cases, she noted, the "ability of the Middle Ages to remain widely cherished and yet frequently misrepresented is indeed one of its most distinctive features."
"A period of one thousand years," Professor D'Arcens stated.
It stretched from Ireland all the way to China — covering an extensive range of both space and time, which allows people to truly immerse themselves in imagining it.
The reason it has such remarkable staying power in our thoughts and emotions might be because we can participate in it very vividly.
Utilising tools from that time period
In Paracombe, attendees of a "15th-century military" event were occupied with establishing their campsite—including constructing a "gambling den"—using solely the equipment that would have been accessible during that period.
"All of these pieces are handcrafted," Ms Winton mentioned.
She mentioned that this year's event featured around 100 vendor and craftsperson booths.
"Swordsmiths, archers, and bowmakers are among our members, and we also have our designated zone known as the Pale Raven Tavern," Ms Winton stated.
