Pope Leo XIV, America's First Pontiff, Addresses Crowd in St. Peter's Square

Robert Prevost, who became the inaugural American pontiff in the 2,000-year span of the Catholic Church’s existence, has delivered his maiden address to the assembly gathered at St Peter's Square as Pope Leo XIV.

From the loggia of St Peter's Basilica, the pope reflected that although he had been an Augustinian priest, his primary roles were as a Christian and a bishop, adding, "Let us therefore journey together."

Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old member of the Augustinian religious community, adopted the title Leo XIV. Dressed in the conventional crimson papal cloak, he stood out as this was an item Pope Francis chose not to wear after ascending to the papacy in 2013.
