On Thursday, a gathering of 133 cardinals from 70 different nations convened to select Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new pope. The decision was made following less than one full day of discussions regarding the selection of the next head of the Catholic Church.

The newly elected pope has decided to take the name Leo XIV.

As dark smoke emerged around midday on Thursday, the anticipation for the selection of the new pope persisted. Following an afternoon meal break, the cardinals planned to conduct another two sessions of balloting; however, their initial vote did not reach a consensus.

The most varied group of cardinals in terms of geography in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church has adhered to ancient traditions within the Sistine Chapel to choose their new leader for the 1.4 billion believers.

During the last hundred years, electing a pope has required anywhere from three to eight rounds of voting.
