Pentagon's Leaders Acknowledge: SpaceX and Elon Musk Pose a Challenge, Analyst Says

Elon Musk envisions a future where his network and influence cannot be limited by anyone on Earth. according to The Atlantic On Tuesday, the outlet cautioned the government against depending exclusively on Musk’s SpaceX and Starlink.

"The United States government would have valid motives to refrain from complete reliance on SpaceX for utilizing the satellite-powered web," noted the staff writer. Ross Andersen penned.

However, he notes, the government is nearly achieving exactly that.

At present, the military operates an orbital network comprised of advanced military satellites. These enable secure governmental communication as well as surveillance capabilities. Andersen notes, "This is a Musk initiative: SpaceX constructs the satellites and ferries them to orbit.”

The leadership of the Pentagon acknowledges this as an issue, or at least they used to, Andersen mentioned, "Towards the conclusion of the Biden administration, the U.S. Space Force" published A fresh strategy directed policymakers to prevent dependence solely on one particular firm. "However, this changed once the Defense Department fell under Trump’s influence."

Andersen contacted the Pentagon and inquired if "preventing an excessive dependence on a single supplier" remained a key objective.

He did not hear back and noted that even if the agency expands to more space vendors, the process would take years.

"The issue is that 'SpaceX excels at manufacturing satellites and launching them into orbit,' " he stated.

Each day, the firm has the capability to produce four quarter-tonne satellites. Furthermore, SpaceX’s recyclable Falcon 9 rocket can accommodate over 25 of these units simultaneously during launches. Currently, no rivaling corporation can equal this level of efficiency. The reason being most companies continue constructing their rockets entirely anew for individual missions.

According to The Atlantic, last year, SpaceX managed to launch 133 rockets into space, with over 60% of these missions transporting Starlink satellites. Collectively, all of Elon Musk’s commercial rivals as well as every country’s military sent up fewer rockets than he did.

Prior to SpaceX engineers starting to launch test satellites around six years ago, there were less than 2,000 operational satellites circling Earth. Now, over 7,000 of these satellites from Elon Musk’s company encircle our planet, with additional ones being added "nearly every week."
