Kevin Walters Responds to Speculation About Replacing Des Hasler as Gold Coast Titans Coach

Kevin Walters maintains his desire to return as a coach in the NRL but has declined to comment It’s speculated that he might take over from Des Hasler. After deeming it "disrespectful" toward the experienced coach, Hasler’s position with the Gold Coast is now in jeopardy. His role at the club has become precarious following a disappointing beginning to the season, where the Titans currently rank 16th with only two victories out of their first eight matches.

It has come to light that the beleaguered coach has several performance-based conditions in his agreement with the Titans. These terms might allow the team to dismiss Hasler without having to compensate him, provided the experienced coach fails to improve their situation. News Corp reports That means Hasler will be let go if Gold Coast doesn’t secure a spot in the top eight and participate in the finals this season.

The Daily Telegraph Michael Carayannis mentions that the contract includes provisions stating that if Gold Coast fails to make the playoffs later in the season, the Titans have the option to terminate the agreement with the experienced coach at that point. "Although he initially signed for a three-year term, his contract contains specific conditions—one of which is tied to making the top eight," explained Carayannis.

If they don't secure a spot in the top eight this year, the Titans aren't required to retain his services for next season. Additionally, if they become mathematically out of contention for the finals, they have the option to part ways with him right away.

Having 14 victories typically deemed essential for qualifying for the playoffs in most seasons suggests that Hasler’s Titans must secure wins in at least 12 out of their remaining 14 matches this year to ensure his position remains intact. This season has proven challenging for the Titans due to several critical player injuries; notably, Kiwi international fullback Keano Kini’s absence for the rest of the campaign represents a significant setback.

Former representative player David Fifita has faced challenges following pre-season ankle surgery, which will sideline him for a significant duration. Coach Hasler has had concerns with the inconsistent performance of the powerful back-rower in 2025, as well as issues with the Gold Coast Titans' defense, which has allowed 250 points to be scored against them—the second-highest total this season, just above last-place Parramatta Eels.

Consequently, Hasler’s position is now facing significant examination due to reports suggesting Walters might be considered for the role of replacing him as the Gold Coast coach. Previously, Walters was unceremoniously dismissed from his coaching post at the Broncos following their failure to qualify for the playoffs last season, even though he had guided them to the championship game the previous year.

Walters has transitioned into a media position at Fox League, where he serves as one of their expert analysts for league coverage. However, he has expressed his desire to eventually reclaim a spot as an NRL head coach. Additionally, according to reports, Walters remains keen on returning to such a role in the future. The Courier Mail Fox Sports executives will not obstruct Walters if he secures an NRL coaching position.

However, Walters has declined to lend credibility to speculations suggesting he might take over from Hasler at the Titans following his backing of the beleaguered coach. "While I've always expressed my desire to return as a coach someday, I believe it would be somewhat disrespectful towards Des and the Titans," Walters stated.

We're heading into Round 10; I believe Des needs to make something happen here. Certainly, not everything has worked out for their side this season, but I'm confident he can steer them back on track, and the Titans have the potential to recover too. Am I interested in coaching again? Absolutely, I've mentioned that publicly multiple times. However, only under the appropriate circumstances with the right squad would it be suitable. For now, discussing another coach seems somewhat inappropriate... plus, having been in Des' position before as a coach, I understand.

The Gold Coast failed to make the playoffs last year despite ending up 14th under Hasler’s initial tenure as head coach, with their absence largely attributed to losing both their team leader and star player, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, for the entire duration of the season. Unless there's an extraordinary shift in fortunes come 2025, the Titans seem destined to fall short of securing one of the top eight spots once more.

However, Walters expresses sympathy for twice-premiership-winning coach Hasler, stating that he deserves additional time with the team. He commented, “Des definitely requires the respect of being allowed more time… he has been in charge for just 12 months." Walters also noted that individuals within the sport seem ready to pull the plug prematurely.
