Inmates and Guards Unite: The Inspiring Story of the Prison Farm Behind Bars

At Macquarie Correctional Centre in Western New South Wales, story of collaboration and persistence is unfolding. Inmates and prison officers are farming commercial quantities of fresh food in a purpose-built indoor facility.

One of the approximately 400 male inmates in maximum-security at Macquarie reached out to me around five years back with this concept, suggesting it could serve as basis of a PhD I consented to oversee the project.

Prisoners at Macquarie Correctional Centre are inspired to continue their studies and cater to their interests. This method draws inspiration from the Scandinavian prison system , which boasts the world’s lowest re-offending rates .

The initiative demonstrates that food gardening offers a significant pastime for prisoners, many of whom did not previously have the chance to acquire skills in planting and cultivating crops.

Why farm indoors?

The initiative entailed cultivating crops inside due to the ability to meticulously manage the surroundings. This isolation from weather conditions eliminates concerns over harsh events like frost or heatwaves.

This type of “ controlled environment agriculture It is also more efficient as it demands fewer resources compared to conventional farming, primarily owing to reduced losses from pests and diseases.

From vision to reality

Prisoners who are studying do not have internet access. Instead, emails are either printed or passed along manually. When students need to view information online, it must be done with the oversight of an authorized officer.

The farm supplies produce for the prison café. Starting from November 2023, the value of goods provided by the farm to the café amounts to approximately $3,500.

The previous year saw roughly 30 entries at our local agricultural fair. M Farm took home top honors in the region for their superior fresh goods.
