Mitchell Taylor, who serves as both the managing director and winemaker for Clare Valley’s renowned Taylors Wines, first observed distinct regional variations of Australian shiraz during his studies in oenology at Charles Sturt University back in the 1990s.
He mentions that with Clare Shiraz, you can enjoy those delightful smooth and velvety blackberry flavors in the middle palate," he explains. "On the other hand, McLaren Vale Shiraz usually offers excellent longevity along with notes of licorice and spices.
Taylor's fascination with these local nuances resulted in the development of the Jaraman line, featuring wines made from grapes sourced from two distinct regions. For instance, the Taylor's Jaraman Shiraz brings together fruits from both the Clare Valley and McLaren Vale areas.

The accolades arrive as top wineries such as Taylors strive to have the Australian wine sector acknowledged globally for crafting high-quality beverages instead of merely focusing on affordable and approachable beginner choices.
"Shiraz plays a crucial role in showcasing Australia's high-quality wines since our Shiraz is highly respected worldwide," states Taylor, who belongs to the First Families of Wine in Australia—a collective of 12 families dedicated to promoting Australian wine internationally.

Since the 1960s, the Taylors brand has been closely linked with the Clare region after Bill Taylor (Snr) acquired a 440-acre property along the Wakefield River close to Auburn. This land was destined to serve as the cornerstone for their family winery.
In the late 1950s, the Taylors became acquainted with the promise of Clare Valley reds during their time as Sydney-based wine traders. They joined forces with the Clare Valley Co-operative to market their own wines using the Chateau Clare brand.
"My grandfather was passionate about the exceptional wines of Europe and believed that Clare's terroir had the potential to create wines that could compete with the finest ones from Bordeaux,"Taylor explains.
Although cabernet still holds significance for the Taylors business—and has validated Mr. Taylor’s insights by triumphing over top Bordeaux wines in global contests—shiraz has emerged as their predominant varietal.
