Dive Into the £189 Million Futuristic "Very Light" Transport System

The automotive hub of the UK is set to undergo a transportation transformation with a cutting-edge railway system.

Coventry aims to develop a Very Light Rail system, touted as an improved version of a tram.

These buses, capable of transporting up to 60 passengers, offer a more cost-effective and adaptable solution compared to conventional rail systems.

The £189,000,000 route hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but locals Graham and Joe Dibbins are offering everyone an opportunity to try it out firsthand.

They both work as train operators for RailAdventure UK, set to run trial services on a 721-foot (220-meter) track linking Greyfriars and Queen Victoria Roads.

Graham stated, "It's an incredible experience to be part of this cutting-edge initiative, and even more so because I'm collaborating professionally with my son—as train operators—for the very first time."

Joe commented, "I find it incredible that I'm collaborating with the individual I admire most—my father. The technological sophistication of the Coventry Very Light Rail project just adds to this extraordinary experience."

Richard Parker, the mayor of West Midlands, stated that it is 'appropriate for the operator of this initial test track to be a local West Midland-based business.'

Councillor Jim O'Boyle, who serves as a cabinet member for jobs, regeneration, and climate change at the council, stated that the 'eco-friendly' CVLR system will 'transform transportation in Coventry.'

He stated: "The introduction of Very Light Rail marks the start of our initiative to transform transportation within our city, combat climate change, enhance air quality, and offer a dependable and easily accessible mode of travel."

'We will operate Very Light Rail for four weeks, during which time locals can try out this unique vehicle and track system and share their thoughts on the experience.'

What sets 'very light rail' apart?

The price tag for construction is what distinguishes it most notably from conventional trams.

The approximate expense per kilometre (0.6 miles) stands at £10,000,000, as opposed to £30,000,000 for the equivalent distance.

The new track is positioned approximately 11 inches (30cm) above the road surface, reducing the need for costly and lengthy efforts to move pipes and cables, according to the council.

The VLR system operates using battery power, which means, as opposed to trams, there is no requirement for overhead wires.

Is it possible for London to implement a 'very light rail' system?

The lightweight, electrified rail system has been promoted as a means to revive dormant railway tracks.

No concrete plans currently exist for constructing ultra-light rail systems in London; however, both Transport for London (TfL) and the London Assembly have explored and assessed this possibility over the years.

It is reported that significant railway companies have expressed interest in these ultra-light rail systems, with additional tests scheduled to commence in 2026.

In London, the nearest equivalent to the new train system is the tram network, which continues to operate throughout the southern districts.

The history of London trams dates back over 200 years, yet there were periods when it almost disappeared for good .

The ultra-light rail shares some characteristics with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), an automated railway service running in London since the 1980s across a 24-mile network.

DLR Is a lightweight train system, operating on specially designed tracks primarily situated outside, linking Canary Wharf, the City, Stratford, Lewisham, and Woolwich.

While very light rail relies on batteries for power, the DLR obtains its energy from a bottom-contact third rail system located beneath the train.

The government has announced that self-driving cars are anticipated to appear on UK roads by 2026, paving the way for increased autonomy in railway systems as well.

The Coventry very light rail system has been designed for potential future implementation of autonomous operations.

The council has assured that pedestrians, cyclists, and disabled passengers will have 'adequate facilities' once the new routes become operational.
