Chinese Automaker Bolds Claim: New Supercar Set to Outshine Ferrari

China’s Great Wall Motors is making bold claims about its upcoming hybrid supercar—saying it will outperform none other than the Ferrari SF90, one of the most iconic high-performance machines on the market.

Based on a report by CnEVPost The Great Wall has invested five years in crafting its premier vehicle and asserts that it will outperform Ferrari’s 1,000-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 hybrid.

That’s no small feat.

The Ferrari SF90 is the Italian automaker’s first plug-in hybrid supercar, and widely considered one of the most advanced high-performance vehicles to date. It features a 3.9-liter V8 engine paired with three electric motors.

No V12—or V8—Beneath the Bonnet

In contrast to Ferrari’s plans, Great Wall has no intention of installing a V12 or even a V8 engine under the hood.

During an interview with a Chinese blogger, the company’s technical director, Wu Huixiao, acknowledged that their design does not have sufficient space to accommodate such large engines.

Rather than opting for an all-electric approach, the Chinese carmaker is working on a hybrid system centered around either a 3.0-liter V6 or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder internal combustion engine, complemented by two electric motors. This configuration allegedly delivers up to 850 horsepower—which is still 150 horsepower less than what the SF90 offers.

The Great Wall has reportedly struggled with using a carbon fiber monococque and maintaining control over development expenses.

To assist in narrowing the performance discrepancy, Great Wall is said to have enlisted an expert from the Nürburgring to refine the vehicle—a trend increasingly seen as Chinese manufacturers turn to European professionals for their engineering and design expertise.

This isn’t the first occurrence of such an event: take Xiaomi as an instance; they notably employed a previous BMW designer for their electric vehicle initiative.
