Aussie Suburb in Turmoil Over Controversial Plan to Remove Iconic Tree

A large indigenous tree that has provided shade to an Australian street for many years has been contentiousingly marked for removal by a local council following complaints about its roots damaging a driveway. Locals nearby have raised concerns. Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach are outraged and have started petitions to save it, with numerous people asserting that there has been a "pattern" of removing the suburb’s green cover, which diminishes its attractiveness for dog walkers, joggers, and families.

"It was among the earliest trees that my daughter Libby scaled in our neighborhood. Hence, it'll definitely feel like a loss. My family and I visited the nearby park and noticed multiple big trees had been cut down there without much public awareness," shared Talitha, a mother from Bondi, with Yahoo News.

Many residents have endorsed a petition affixed to the fig tree on Edward Street, requesting its preservation. Numerous others have joined an online campaign via Change.org. This comes following widespread concern among locals who were shocked to see significant trees unexpectedly removed from the neighboring Dickson Park.

When Nadya Udachina was out with her dog, she spotted a local government notice posted near the tree on Edward Street, indicating plans to remove the tree. Determined to preserve both the tree and the wildlife it supports, she initiated a petition. "We haven't given up yet; we're still hopeful," she shared with Yahoo.

The dispute erupted following the decision made by Waverley Council’s Liberal mayor, whose tie-breaking vote led to the removal of the tree. This move broke the stalemate between Green and Labor councillors, who wished to keep the tree, and the Liberals, who supported its removal.

A local resident named Claire Morris got involved in campaigning to save the tree due to her frustration over the systematic destruction of her neighborhood’s verdant street scene.

"It simply appears as though this is another trend with the Waverley Council where so many of our magnificent old fig trees are getting severely cut back," she mentioned.

Twenty years ago, Bondi was a little rough around the edges, with lots of smaller apartment blocks with large backyards and cheap backpacker accommodation.

But Merten believes the problem is bigger than just one tree, and she’s bringing forward a motion for Waverley Council to adopt a tree management plan that would create clear policy for preserving the LGA’s canopy.

I believe we must engage in more knowledgeable dialogues with the local population. Practically speaking, it’s unfeasible to preserve each individual tree; however, we ought to advocate for saving as many trees as feasible. We should definitely establish a system that enables these decisions to be made openly and through consultations involving the public.

Council avoids addressing queries about the tree's prospects.

Understanding how widespread the problem is remains a challenge. Waverley Council did not respond directly to six questions from Yahoo about its plan to axe the tree, resident concerns about Bondi's apparent vanishing canopy, and how many trees it had removed in the past 12 months.

The organization stated that they are "firmly dedicated to safeguarding and increasing the city’s tree canopy" as part of their Greening and Cooling Strategy. This initiative targets achieving a 35 percent coverage of trees across the area by the year 2032.

"When removal is required, the council makes sure it’s integrated into a comprehensive strategy that encompasses replanting initiatives, careful choice of tree species for future canopy development, and fair distribution of vegetation across the area," the statement read.

"Council continues to invest in tree planting, maintenance and community greening initiatives to achieve its goal of increasing tree canopy across the LGA in the face of a changing climate.”
