In a statement, Albanese extended an invitation to the newly elected pope—the inaugural American pontiff—to visit Australia in 2028 for the International Eucharistic Congress.

When the announcement was made, people gathered in St. Peter’s Square responded with enthusiastic applause and shouts of "Viva il papa!" as they looked forward to seeing the newly elected pontiff for the first time.

The context: The 133 papal electors commenced their conclave on May 7th, and they made a decision during the initial round of balloting on what would be considered the first complete day of voting.

The Pope's identity and selected name will be revealed from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica after the classic Latin announcement "Habemus Papam."

He will subsequently arrive wearing papal vestments to confer blessings upon the assembly gathered in St Peter’s Square.

Rumors were swirling around Pietro Parolin, who serves as the Vatican’s Secretary of State; Peter Turkson from Ghana, recognized for his progressive stances on social equity; Luis Tagle from the Philippines, a proponent of inclusive practices; and Matteo Zuppi, an Italian cardinal celebrated for his humanitarian work, which includes orchestrating a peace initiative in Ukraine.

The Vatican has not yet announced the identity of the new pope.
