The award-winning airline Air New Zealand has revealed initial images of its upcoming 787-9 Dreamliner plane. Scheduled to have its maiden voyage internationally on May 19th, this 'first-of-its-kind' refurbished 787-9 Dreamliner named ZK-NZH will mark "a new chapter in air travel" for both local and global passengers. Tickets for the airline's latest 787 offering, featuring entirely new Business Premier Luxe seating options, will be available starting from May 7th.

During a special unveiling event in Auckland on Tuesday, Air New Zealand’s CEO Greg Foran formally announced that the airline’s initial Dreamliner jet—the first out of an upcoming fleet of 14—had received clearance for air travel. The chief executive highlighted the "superior cabin environment," noting that this plane underwent a comprehensive revamp over 184 days in Singapore. This transformation represents the end result of several years dedicated to thorough investigation, cutting-edge development, and meticulous planning.

"This marks the very first complete nose-to-tail renovation of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and signifies the launch of our initial new onboard offering in more than 15 years. We've thoroughly reinvented air travel with Air New Zealand, integrating sophisticated design aspects, creative Kiwi details, and enhancements inspired by insights gathered from countless customers," stated Foran.

In terms of entertainment enhancements, 4K HD displays equipped with Bluetooth audio connectivity have become standard across all zones. This allows travelers to utilize their smartphones as controllers—to curate viewing lists, monitor flights, or employ Picture-in-Picture features for multi-tasking purposes.

Business Premier

In 2025, the Business Premier class was entirely redesigned, featuring an enhanced premium cabin with a fresh configuration and angles. As stated by Air New Zealand, this transformation aimed at optimizing both personal space and privacy, utilizing features such as sliding privacy panels and dividers between center seats tailored for traveling pairs.

When you're prepared for sleep, the recently-added lie-flat reclining seats offer a more comfortable position. Passengers will also find new wireless charging facilities along with a standard 24-inch inflight entertainment display.

Business Premier Luxe

Stepping up from the Premier cabin class, the Business Premier Luxe offers a range of subtle yet advantageous enhancements aimed at boosting comfort and convenience. This premium category includes four brand new seats located in the first row of the Business Premier section, available as an upgrade option when booking a Business Premier ticket. Upon selection, passengers will benefit from features such as a fully enclosed space, a more spacious bed, and extra area where two people can comfortably eat.

Premium Economy

Air New Zealand reports that the Premium Economy cabin has undergone numerous enhancements focused on enhancing both privacy and storage options as part of their refurbishment initiative. With these updates, travelers in this section benefit from seats featuring a solid outer frame akin to those found in the current Business Class configuration. Consequently, occupants can lean back fully without disturbing the individual seated behind them. Moreover, patrons in the Premium Economy category gain access to side panels on their seats which not only provide greater personal space but also offer more room for storing items.

Economy

From a budget-friendly perspective, the improved Economy class has seen a modest enhancement in its design. This cabin now features inflight entertainment screens that are 50 percent larger, redesigned snack trays, and an expanded Economy Stretch choice offering additional legroom.

The inaugural refurbished Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner of Air New Zealand will take off on Monday, May 19th, operating a route between Auckland and Brisbane as a round trip.
