Since OpenAI unveiled an initial version of ChatGPT in November 2022, society has been split regarding whether artificial intelligence (AI) poses a danger to humankind or serves as a means for progress.

A 2023 global study on the shifting public perceptions of AI, conducted by KPMG and The University of Queensland, found that 85% of respondents think AI has some benefits, but only half of all respondents believe that the benefits outweigh the risks.

During this discussion, Patty McCord takes a definitive stance. McCord suggests that a significant portion of the apprehension originates from cultural tales influenced by dystopian science fiction. These narratives frequently portray emerging technologies not as aids for advancement but as dangers to humankind.

Even with her extensive experience in the entertainment sector, Patty McCord isn’t worried about how artificial intelligence might affect art. She acknowledges the concerns artists have, yet feels confident that AI will become part of the creative workflow rather than completely taking over what humans do.

AI and work

McCord suggests that the effect of artificial intelligence on our society hinges on how individuals utilize it, particularly focusing on how managers incorporate it into their sectors and embed it within the routine tasks of their workforce.

McCord remarked about the previous wave of robotics, saying, "We did an inadequate job of providing vocational training for those who once performed the tasks now handled by robots, so they could maintain and support these robotic systems."

As she points out, this error frequently arises due to biases in the work environment, and these mistakes shouldn’t be replicated when working with AI.

"There was an inherent prejudice suggesting ‘these individuals lack skills and training, so they won’t manage,’ yet the reality is that they could have succeeded; it’s just that no one had previously entrusted them with the opportunity," McCord clarified.
