This data is then utilized by the software to decide which crabs can be included in a particular catch and which ones fishermen have to release back into the sea.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Assisting Crab Fishermen

CrabScan360 is available in two editions: one designed for use in the field and another tailored for the factory environment.

The mobile outdoor edition, launched in April, resembles a carry-on suitcase in dimensions and has been designed for rapid deployment onto vessels and piers. Anglers place individual crabs onto the scanning unit, which then captures images. The apparatus employs sensors along with specialized software to immediately assess and record details such as each crab’s measurements, mass, sex, and compliance with regulations.

The factory model currently being developed will be completely automated. As crabs travel down a conveyer belt, they go beneath a scanning system that assesses each crab individually. Following this evaluation, the crabs are categorized accordingly. Every scan generates a distinct data entry that gets stored in the cloud. This allows users to access their account and monitor various metrics like mean dimensions, output rates, and compliance with fishing regulations for the whole catch.

CrabScan360 also creates a digital fingerprint For every scanned crab, Terry mentioned that this process offers "immediate and precise digital documentation linked to the exact capture site, along with the time and date." This information accompanies each crab throughout the distribution network, ensuring a transparent record from the moment it’s caught until it reaches processing.

Terry mentioned this simplifies tracking quality, cutting down errors, and avoiding wastage. 'By having improved information throughout each process, seafood businesses can swiftly make informed choices regarding which products to retain, their pricing, and distribution destinations,' he explained, highlighting an enhancement towards a more effective and lucrative logistics network.

The artificial intelligence responsible for the digital fingerprints assists in verifying that every fish caught meets sustainability standards, which is becoming a crucial certification. As major retailers like Whole Foods, Walmart, and Costco have pledged to sell only sustainably certified seafood by 2027 or sooner, this verification becomes even more significant.
