This summer, the energy produced by rooftop solar panels has increased by twenty percent, currently accounting for sixteen per cent of Australia’s overall electricity supply.
According to new data released by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the spike is driven by new installations and favorable weather conditions.
The overall production generated nationwide from early December until the end of February this year reached 10,592 GWh, which is higher than the 8,852 GWh recorded during last summer and the 8,102 GWh seen in 2022/2023.
Throughout the nation, New South Wales took the lead with a 25.4 percent increase in rooftop solar energy production, trailed by Victoria with a 23.1 percent rise and South Australia with a 22.5 percent boost.
Queensland’s rooftop production jumped by 18 per cent, Tasmania saw a 8.9 per cent spike while Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System lifted output by 6.2 per cent.
Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen hailed the results, saying total rooftop solar output had grown 55 per cent since the Albanese Labor government was elected with one in three households now using solar panels.
"There's a good reason why Australia's solar power is the envy of the world—it provides cleaner and more affordable energy to countless homes," he stated.
“This new data reinforces why Labor’s Cheaper Home Batteries program makes so much sense – with record solar output, we want to help more households use that energy when it’s needed most, to get bills down and take pressure off the grid.”
The figures show that there are over 4 million solar panels installed nationwide, primarily atop residential roofs. Queensland tops this list with 1,104,200 installations, followed closely by New South Wales with 1,067,900, and Victoria rounding off the top three with 809,500 units.
Western Australia currently boasts 534,800 solar panels, South Australia hosts 426,800, the Australian Capital Territory has 61,400, Tasmania also has 61,400, and the Northern Territory includes 24,200.
As reported by the Australian Energy Market Operator, renewables accounted for a new high of 46% of the market’s electrical supply in the last quarter of 2024.
